At Lollypop Farm, we believe that every pet deserves access to compassionate care and every pet owner deserves support in keeping their beloved companions happy and healthy. Over the past few years, our Community Pet Care Events have become an essential part of that mission, reaching families across the Greater Rochester area who may otherwise face barriers to veterinary care.

By providing core vaccines, pet food, and essential supplies at no cost, Lollypop Farm helps keep pets healthy, safe, and right where they belong: at home with their families.

Expanding Access to Veterinary Care
The Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic at Lollypop Farm provides critical veterinary services for thousands of abandoned and neglected animals that we care for every year, as well as pets in our community who face barriers to accessing preventative care.

That’s where our dedicated team steps in. At this year’s Community Pet Care Events, the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic team administered 1,883 vaccines — 1,573 for dogs and 310 for cats — a remarkable 65% increase from last year’s total, demonstrating the need for our services throughout the Greater Rochester region. Each vaccine given represents a healthier pet.

More Than Medicine
Beyond vaccines, the Lollypop Farm Pet Pantry distributed nearly 6,000 pounds of pet food and numerous supplies to families in need. Our Behavior and Education Teams were also on-site to answer training questions and share resources, empowering pet owners with tools to prevent behavior challenges before they become reasons for surrender.

A Community Effort
These events wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our partners and sponsors. We extend heartfelt thanks to the Petco Love Foundation for providing vaccines and to Fidelis Care for sponsoring our final events of the year. Thank you to Christel’s Claws and Paws for providing nail trims at this year’s events. We’re also deeply grateful to our community partners who opened their doors and hearts to host these events: Cameron Communities, New Hope Community Development Corp at David F Gantt R-Center, Kind Hearts Ministries at Glad Tidings Church, The People’s Pantry of Rochester, Greater Harvest Baptist Church, and Father Tracy Advocacy Center. Lastly, none of this would be possible without your support.

When Vanilla Bean first arrived at Lollypop Farm with his littermates, he seemed like just another tiny kitten in need of care. One of 15 kittens admitted that day, he blended in at first glance. But it didn’t take long for our veterinary team to notice something unusual, something that would make his journey far more challenging than the rest of his siblings.

Vanilla Bean was born with a rare congenital condition called pectus excavatum, in which the sternum curves inward toward the chest cavity. For a growing kitten, this deformity can place dangerous pressure on the heart and lungs, causing serious health problems if left untreated.

During his intake exam, our veterinary team immediately recognized the sunken shape of his chest. At just nine weeks old and weighing only three pounds, Vanilla Bean needed surgery if he was going to have a healthy future.

But there was a catch—this highly specialized procedure wasn’t something our staff had performed before.

Rather than see the challenge as a roadblock, Dr. Anna Young turned it into an opportunity. She and two veterinary team members were preparing to attend a shelter medicine conference at Cornell University, where she connected with a former professor. Not only did he agree to perform Vanilla Bean’s surgery, but he also offered to train Dr. Young in the technique, ensuring that our clinic could help future patients with the same condition.

When the day of the operation arrived, Dr. Young was nervous but determined. Vanilla Bean’s case was severe, one of the worst her professor had ever seen. The surgery presented risks, but the prospect of giving Vanilla Bean a significantly improved quality of life was all the motivation Dr. Young needed. The two veterinarians got to work, painstakingly threading each suture under the sternum, careful not to damage any internal structures, especially the heart. After completing all twelve sutures and anchoring them to an external splint, the surgery was complete.

Over the next several weeks, Vanilla Bean returned to our clinic to see Dr. Young and have his bandages changed before returning to the comfort of his foster home. Four weeks later, he was finally able to have the splint removed for good, with the skin beneath the cast healing well. Even more exciting, Vanilla Bean found a new home!

Stories like Vanilla Bean’s are only possible because of the incredible support of our community. Your generosity empowers our veterinary team to take on complex cases, provide lifesaving surgeries, and give pets with special challenges the chance to live long, happy lives.

If ever a kitten earned the name Firefighter, it’s this brave little gray boy. Found staggering in the parking lot of a fire station, he was clearly very sick and in desperate need of help.

At just over two months old, Firefighter weighed only a pound. When he arrived at the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic at Lollypop Farm, the team discovered just how much he had been battling on his own. He was dehydrated, underweight, suffering from conjunctivitis, covered in fleas, and unable to eat because of painful ulcers in his mouth. To make matters worse, he even had a cuterebra (a type of parasite) in his neck, which was quickly removed.

Despite everything, this tiny fighter never gave up. With care, love, and careful monitoring by our veterinary team, Firefighter began to heal and grow stronger day by day.

He still needs a little more time before he’s ready to be neutered and adopted, but when the time comes, Firefighter will spark joy and light a fire in someone’s heart forever.

From New Hartford to Lollypop Farm: 22 Cats Transport Journey https://www.lollypop.org/blog/new-hartford-to-lollypop-farm-22-cats-transport-journey/ Thu, 31 Jul 2025 13:07:27 +0000 https://www.lollypop.org/?p=43762 It started with a phone call — a report of an unpleasant odor coming from a home in New Hartford. It started with a phone call — a report of an unpleasant odor coming from a home in New Hartford. When Animal Control Officer John Treem arrived to investigate, he discovered that dozens of cats had been left behind inside the home, and all required care.

Unfortunately, resources were limited. The town’s animal control facility was temporarily closed for construction, and the local humane society was already at capacity. With no clear place to bring the animals, Officer Treem was left with few options and an urgent need to find help.

Treem began networking out, taking a few cats at a time to shelters in the area and farther out. Then, Treem called Lollypop Farm, nearly two hours away. Without hesitation, the Lollypop Farm Foster and Rescue team jumped into action to help take 22 cats from the case.

The frightened felines were transported over 100 miles to Lollypop Farm. Many were infested with fleas and suffering from ear mites, but remarkably, they were otherwise in good health. Here, each one was given comfort, care, and the promise of a better tomorrow.

Thanks to Lollypop Farm’s incredible foster network, these furry friends didn’t have to stay in the shelter for long. Most of them are kittens, just months old, who are now in foster care learning to trust people and settle into home life. Once they’re ready, they’ll be looking for families to love them. Their journey is only possible because compassionate people came together. It’s the generosity of fosters, donors, and supporters like you that empowers Lollypop Farm to respond in moments of crisis and to make a lasting impact on animal welfare across New York State.

Lollypop Farm often tries to help when other shelters are full or emergencies arise, because every pet deserves a second chance — no matter where they come from. With many rescues and shelters often at capacity, providing support to each other can help save more lives. Our Rescue and Transport Coordinator, Susie, works daily to connect animals with opportunities for healing and hope, whether that means finding them help elsewhere or bringing them here to Lollypop Farm.

Please note: the investigation in this case is ongoing and part of the New Hartford Police Department’s jurisdiction. Thanks to the hard work from Animal Control Officer Treem and the team in New Hartford, 54 cats have been removed from the property as of July 25th, and more traps have been set in case more are hiding. Charges have been filed, but are still pending.

There are so many ways to get involved and help animals find the loving homes they deserve. Learn how you can adopt, foster, or donate to help pets like these find the loving homes they deserve.

From Timid to Treasured: Lenny’s Journey from Spirit Cat to Beloved Companion https://www.lollypop.org/blog/lenny-shy-to-loving-companion/ Tue, 24 Jun 2025 12:23:12 +0000 https://www.lollypop.org/?p=42705 Every cat who arrives at Lollypop Farm brings their own personality, and sometimes, a history we may never fully know. Every cat who arrives at Lollypop Farm brings their own personality, and sometimes, a history we may never fully know. For some, like our “Spirit Cats,” their fearfulness often stems from limited or difficult interactions with people. These cats may shy away from attention, but with time, patience, and the companionship of other cats, they can begin to open up and thrive.

Lenny was one of those cats.

He came to Lollypop Farm as a transfer from a local rescue. Quiet and unsure, Lenny showed signs of having lived much of his life outdoors—his tipped ear a common marker for spayed or neutered community cats. He wasn’t aggressive or angry; he simply preferred to stay tucked away inside his carrier, watching the world from the shadows.

While he remained wary around people, Lenny found comfort in the company of other cats. At the Lollypop Farm Day Lily Cat Adoption Center, larger spaces called colony rooms are designed for cats who are shy or overwhelmed in traditional kennel settings. These spaces allowed Lenny to live with other cats, and that’s where we saw glimmers of the cat he could be. His progress was always tied to his feline companions: when his colony mates were adopted, Lenny would retreat into his shell again.

That is, until Lenny met Gumbo.

One of our adoption counselors, Nicole, had friends who were grieving the loss of their beloved cat, Jasmine. Their remaining cat, Gumbo, was noticeably sad without his longtime companion. When Nicole told them about Lenny, they saw a chance to give Gumbo a new friend and to offer Lenny the home he so deserved.

The match was perfect.

Almost immediately after arriving at his new home, Lenny and Gumbo became fast friends. And just as quickly, Lenny’s shy demeanor melted away. The once-reserved Spirit Cat transformed into a playful, affectionate housecat. Today, Lenny spends his time wrestling with Gumbo, snoozing in bed with his people, and scaling his cat tree with confidence. Lenny found a perfect home with his new family.

Lenny’s story is a reminder that some cats just need a little extra time, extra love, and sometimes, another cat to show them the way.
