Every animal who comes through Lollypop Farm’s doors has a story. Some are found wandering with no one to call their own, while others, like Amarii, arrive from loving families who, despite their best efforts, can no longer provide the care their pet needs.

With the rising cost and limited availability of affordable veterinary care, many pets arrive with medical conditions that require immediate and often complex treatment.

For Amarii’s family, that heartbreaking decision came after months of trying to manage her painful condition. The beautiful young husky had already undergone surgery to correct a prolapsed rectum, but when the issue returned, her care became too much for her owner to manage alone. Hoping Amarii could finally receive the treatment she needed, they made the loving decision to surrender her to Lollypop Farm.

Upon her arrival, our veterinary team immediately took action. Amarii was sedated and brought into surgery to repair the prolapse once more. The procedure went well, but during her recovery, it became clear that she needed additional care. A few days later, Dr. Cristina Cadavieco, Lollypop Farm Medical Director, performed a second, more extensive surgery during Amarii’s spay, hoping this would finally bring her relief.

For a short while, things seemed to be looking up, until staff began noticing that Amarii’s bedding was frequently soaked in urine when she woke up. What at first appeared to be simple house-soiling was actually a sign of something more serious: urinary incontinence.

After ruling out infection and bladder stones, Dr. Cristina referred Amarii to a veterinary specialist for advanced diagnostics. There, an ultrasound revealed the true cause of ectopic ureters, a congenital condition where the tubes carrying urine from the kidneys bypass the bladder entirely. Without surgery, Amarii would face a lifetime of discomfort, infections, and difficulty finding a home.

Most of the veterinary care our animals receive happens right here at our on-site Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic. In some cases, like Amarii’s, they require advanced imaging, specialist consultations, or complex surgeries.

That’s where Puma’s Purpose comes in. This special fund supports specialty and emergency veterinary services that our clinic isn’t equipped to address.. For pets like Amarii, Puma’s Purpose makes it possible to access the specialized care that can mean the difference between pain and healing, or between uncertainty and a second chance at life.

Because of compassionate supporters like you, Amarii will soon receive the advanced surgery she needs to finally live free from pain and discomfort and go on to find the loving home she deserves. Help pets like Amarii by replenishing Puma’s Purpose fund here.

Puma’s Purpose ensures that no animal is ever denied care because of cost or complexity. Together, we can enable every pet to heal, thrive, and live the life they were meant to have.

When Moose arrived at Lollypop Farm, his condition told a heartbreaking story. Transferred from another shelter, this sweet little dog carried the visible and hidden scars of mistreatment, including rubber bands that were found embedded around all four of his “wrists.”

Radiographs done at the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic revealed even more: a broken back leg, broken ribs, broken orbital bone, and another broken bone in his front limb. The rib fractures showed signs of healing at different stages, evidence that Moose had endured repeated trauma over time.

Yet despite everything he had been through, Moose showed nothing but love. One of our dedicated veterinary technicians opened her heart and home, providing Moose with a safe foster environment where he could heal, surrounded by comfort and care.

In time, Moose underwent a complex surgery at the Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic. Dr. Cristina Cadavieco performed a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO), a procedure that removes the head and neck of the femur to relieve pain and restore mobility in a damaged hip. Thanks to this surgery and the tireless efforts of his medical and foster teams, Moose began to move forward on the path to recovery.

An arrest was made in Moose’s case, and Moose was surrendered. He will soon be available for adoption and on his way to a new home.

Stories like Moose’s remind us that second chances take time, compassion, and a community that believes in brighter futures for animals in need. Every wag of Moose’s tail is a testament to what’s possible when we come together to heal, protect, and give love where it’s needed most.

Moose’s journey is far from over, but with friends like you, his future is full of hope.

Eight-year-old Juliet arrived at Lollypop Farm in February 2025 as part of a humane law enforcement case. Upon arrival, Juliet and her companions received veterinary care and underwent behavior assessments as part of their journey toward adoption.

By early March, Juliet had received all of her medical care and was ready to find a loving home. Given her history of living with so many dogs in a stressful environment, our staff trainers created a plan to help manage her resource guarding. Using clicker training, they introduced her to “look” and “touch” cues.

During her nearly four months at Lollypop Farm, Juliet charmed staff and volunteers alike. She loved snack time, long walks, and plenty of snuggles. Her goofy personality kept everyone laughing, and she was a regular participant in our Doggy Day Out program , enjoying mini-adventures with community members.

Juliet was adopted in April, but sadly, she was returned to our care a few weeks later. In early June, we featured her in our Clear the Kennels adoption promotion, but the weekend passed, and Juliet was still waiting.

Her second chance finally came on June 12, when a new family took her home. Here’s what her new family had to say:

“So glad I found her. She is well-behaved and just wants to be near her new family. She’s a smart dog who figured out her environment quickly. We don’t restrict her in any way, but she just seems to know what to do, almost like she seeks permission before entering a room. I bring her to my office downtown at least once a week, where she greets all my coworkers and spends time with each of them before moving on to the next. They’re always disappointed when I leave her home.”

Juliet is just one of many sweet senior pups at Lollypop Farm who found a loving home thanks to the kindness and support of people like you. Your generosity made her second chance possible.

Helping shelter dogs learn, grow, and shine!

For dogs in a shelter setting, life can be stressful and uncertain. That’s why our behavior team at Lollypop Farm is going the extra mile to provide enrichment classes for dogs waiting to find loving homes.

These enrichment classes provide valuable opportunities to provide mental stimulation, boost confidence, and teach skills that help dogs thrive once they’re adopted.

And it’s not just the dogs who are benefiting from the engagement. Many of our team members serve as dog “champions” — spending one-on-one time with shelter dogs each day outside of their kennels. These classes give champions new ways to bond with and support their furry friends, while giving the dogs something exciting to look forward to.

Basic Manners
Learning “sit,” “down,” and “stay” may seem simple, but these basic commands help dogs succeed in a home. Some dogs arrive already knowing a few cues, while others are just starting out. Either way, it’s a great way to set them up for future success.

Nosework
This class is designed to help dogs use their brains and noses to find treats. We start by scattering treats around a room, then gradually increase the challenge by hiding them in boxes or containers. It’s a fun mental workout that helps build focus and reduce frustration.

Look at this adorable video to watch Sky in action!

Agility
Agility isn’t just for canine athletes! Even at a beginner’s pace, it’s a fantastic way for dogs to build confidence and coordination. Plus, it’s just plain fun.

5-year-old Belle had SO much fun using her brain during our behavior team’s agility class!

At Lollypop Farm, we’re committed to providing every animal with the care, training, and enrichment they needs while awaiting a second chance. Thanks to these classes, our dogs are gaining valuable life skills—and having a whole lot of fun along the way.

Doggy Day Out: Summer Edition https://www.lollypop.org/blog/doggy-day-out-summer-edition/ Fri, 20 Jun 2025 14:18:51 +0000 https://www.lollypop.org/?p=42607 With the sun shining down and the days getting longer, summer is in full swing in Rochester! With the sun shining down and the days getting longer, summer is in full swing in Rochester! Whether you are spending time with your pup or taking a dog on an adventure through Lollypop Farm’s Doggy Day Out program, there are plenty of ways to beat the heat and make the most of summer together.

Water Dogs
Nothing says summer like a splash in the pool! While many dogs enjoy swimming, not all are natural swimmers, so consider a doggy life vest to help keep less confident pups afloat. Keep a close eye on your pet in the water, and provide steps or other ways for your dog to get in and out freely. Make sure pools are always securely fenced off when not in use to prevent accidents involving pets and people.

Pools aren’t the only way to stay cool. Sprinklers can provide a quick cool-down for people and pets, and they don’t require a lot of time or effort. You could also take your dog on a walk near a creek or small body of water that you can reach with your dog’s leash, so they can stay near you while dipping their toes.

Lounging Around
Some dogs prefer a laid-back summer, and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of relaxation! Walking in the shade, lounging in the backyard, or practicing training are all great ways to keep your dog mentally stimulated at a slower pace to avoid overheating.

Cool Down Activities
Help your dog chill out with these fun, refreshing ideas:

  • Frozen kongs: Stuff a Kong with treats or peanut butter and freeze it for a cooling, brain-engaging snack.
  • Pupsicles: Freeze some food or treats in water for a pet-safe popsicle.
  • Frozen or wet towel: Lay down a cool, wet towel in the shade for your dog to lie on.
  • Kiddie pool: Perfect for small spaces and dogs who love to splash!

Cooler Days/Nights
Not every day is blisteringly hot in the summer, so take advantage of the good weather to have some fun adventures. Hiking, camping, playing at the dog park, walking around the neighborhood, and more are great ways to bond with your dog while having fun yourself. If there’s an activity you love, bring your dog along so they can enjoy the warmth and sunshine with you!

Staying Safe
A lot of people and their pets are out and about during the warmer months, so be sure to keep your pet safe.

  • Leashes are a must: Not only do they keep pets safe, they’re required by law in New York State.
  • Water safety: Fence off pools, and empty kiddie pools when not in use.
  • Never leave pets in cars: Even a few minutes in a parked car can be deadly in the heat.
  • Check the pavement: If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.

Doggy Day Out
Looking for a way to share the summer fun and make a difference? Try Lollypop Farm’s Doggy Day Out program!

This unique opportunity allows you to take a shelter dog out during adoption hours for a day of fun. Whether it’s a walk in the park, a quiet trip for a pup cup, or lounging under a shady tree, you’ll be helping a dog de-stress, enjoy the fresh air, and maybe even meet their future family. Just a few hours outside the shelter can make a huge difference.
